If you are heading up or down the coast of Vietnam I would definately recommend a couple days spent in sunny Nha Trang. You could easily spend the whole time lazing on the long, perfect, white sand beach where you can rent a covered lounge chair for about $3 per day. All along the beach there are people selling parasailing and other beach activities. We loved the parasailing!! You definately need to try to bargain though.
We enjoyed a morning at Thap Ba Mud Spa and Hot Springs about 6 km north of the city center. It is up a small, bumpy, windy road but the journey is worth the experience. For about $5 you can soak in a tub of mineral mud with several friends, rinse off in hot mineral showers, relax in a hot mineral tub, be sprayed by high pressure mineral water massagers, sit under a hot waterfall, then swim in a typical hot mineral water pool. It is fun to watch all of the locals as they believe that the water will lead to better health or cure their ailments.
If you are into the whole spa/body treatment activities then you will also like to know that Nha Trang is absolutely full of cheap salons. You can get manicures and pedicures for as little as $1, massages for $8, cornrow braids for $9, and most anyting else you could want. Walk along the streets and you will find what you are looking for.
About 20 km north of the city there are some wonderfull hiking opportunities. We went to Ba Ha Waterfalls and loved it! You hike for about 30 minutes before you come to a series of natural pools and waterfalls. There were some families at the lower pools but if you hike a little farther you can hae your own private swimming pool. The waterfalls are small enough that you can swim right up to them!
If you want to get off the beach I would recommend a boat trip. Mama Lin's is the best if you are looking for a party atmosphere! The boat stops at 2 snorkel destinations, an outdoor aquarium in the shape of a pirate ship, a lunch anchor, and a beach. There is singing, dancing, and general mayhem involved. At one stop there is a floating bar where you can get free-flow cheapo wine in the water while you swim around.
After a long day relaxing on the beach or on a boat there is nothing better than the fresh seafood BBQs around town. You choose your seafood and they cook it and serve it. I had a giant plate of fish, prawns, clams, squid, etc for $12. Delicious!
